Dealing with behavorial emergiencies

Seven medical and traumatic conditions that are likely to alter a persons behavior.

causes
low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
hypoxia
inadequate blood to the brain (stroke)
head trauma
mind altering drugs. (street or pharmacutical)
excessive cold (hypothermia)
excessive heat (hyperthermia)

General rules for dealing with a psych patient.

Identify yourself and your role
speak slowly and clearly, be calm and reassuring
listen to the person, you may repeat part of their sentence.
do not be judgemental
show compassion not pity
use positive body language
acknowledge the patients feelings
do not enter the patients personal space
be alert for changes in behavior and emotional status
never let him get between you and the door

 

 

Most Psych patients on medication function just fine while they are on their meds.
