Ambulance Operations
There are three phases of a call:\
1. Pre-dispatch: classroom, equipment check, Personally ready, vehicle ready.
2. Dispatch: Receive information. (Try to write it down)
3. En route to the scene: Best route, What equipment needed, contact ALS if needed.
(Before Patient Contact)
At the scene:
1. Scene Size up.
2. Assess the patient and give care.
3. Move to the truck.
4. Reassess and continue care.
5. Give care update at the E/R.
6. Clean, Restock and Ready to Run.
7.Critique the call (What could we do better.)
SPECIAL SITUATIONS
Hazardous Materials:
Remember the "Rule of thumb"
If you cannot cover the entire scene with you thumb, you are too dammed close.
Stay back, Keep others out of the scene, call for other help.
Attempt to assist identifying the material.
Mass casualty incidents:
1. Do not get overwhelmed.
2. Take Charge.
3. Get organized.
4. Size up the scene and get additional help on the way now.
5. Use the Incident management plan.
Personal protective Equipment:
1. heavy duty fire fighter gloves.
2. steel toe boots
3. helmet
4. Standard bunker gear.
5. Personal Safety Eye Wear.
Read and understand the definitions of patients on triage. Know the priorities.
Note: that in ambulance operations you are allowed to travel 10 miles an hour over the speed limit.
Only when using due caution can you drive on the wrong side of the road.
Only after a stop can you enter a red light.
You may not pass a school bus with the lights on.
You can be charged if there is an accident.
-For Air medical transport-
Make contact initially:
1. Notify air of Location, Ground Contact, and patient weight.
2. Advise if it is haz-mat.
3. Make the LZ as close to the scene as possible.
4. make one person in charge of the LZ.
5. Tell dispatch what channel to use to contact.
Landing Zone:
1. Minimum of 100X100 Ft.
2. make sure the area is clear, wet it if needed.
3. must be a flat surface <5* slope
4. all vehicles stay 100 ft. away.
5. Non essential personel 200 Ft. away.
6. Mark and Secure cones, vehicles and personel
7. Know the wind direction.
8. Brief the crew on the LZ using TOWW (Terrain, Obsticles, Wind, Wires.)
9. Yell 'ABORT' on the radio if you see them landing into something.
10 only approach from the front.
11. No smoking for 250 feet.
